Plan Description

This classic house style, with its steep roofline and tidy clapboards, demands a traditional, shade-tree-filled landscape. Fulfilling that function is a trio of elegantly branching deciduous trees. A specimen tree in the foundation planting on the left of the house provides dramatic spring blossoms and summer shade. ~~The trees and shrubs in the beds are underplanted with groundcovers, perennials and bulbs. All the plants in the design are chosen for ease of care and for their attractive foliage, flowers or fruit. For instance, the clusters of tough bronze-leaved shrubs flanking the foot of the drive provide eye-catching color most of the year and remain low enough so they won't block a driver's view. The foundation plantings contain compact plants that won't block the windows or the decorative wooden porch railing. The planting pocket marking the front walk holds low plants that won't engulf the lamp-post or obscure light from the lamp. ~~The designer chooses flagstones and cobblestones to complement the home's traditional clapboards. Flagstones in the walk and on the porch landing are mortared for weed-free upkeep, while the pavers leading around the garage are set in groundcover. The cobble inlay visually extends the plantings across the drive, and the edging serves as a mowing strip. The patches of lawn on both sides of the drive are designed for fast mowing. The ring of mulch under the tree protects the trunk and eliminates the need to hand trim. Also shown here is home plan HPB947 by Home Planners. This easy-care landscape contains graceful shade trees, compact shrubs and an assortment of colorful perennials and bulbs. Weed-free flagstones and cobblestones complement the home's wood siding.
