Plan Description

This extended Cape poses several challenges to the designer. Situated on a corner lot, the house needs access to both streets, but the noise from cars stopping at the intersection needs to be muffled. The two doors located in the front of the house should be distinguished and the long lines of the house played down. The landscape design provides walks leading to both entries while clearly defining the dominant main entrance with a formal brick entry court. Partially hidden by an upright shrub, the entrance to the breezeway remains out of view but is still easily accessible by family members. The semicircular planting bed in front of the walkway leading to the breezeway breaks up the long lines of the brick walk and lawn while balancing the large planting beds beside the house. ~~The landscape on either side of the front door features symmetrically placed trees and shrubs to reflect the formality of the brick entryway. Tall, uniformly oval trees complement the formal design while softening the long lines of the house. ~~Because the house is located on a corner, access to the street with a front walkway is desirable. For unity and harmony, the same brick used in the walkway across the front of the house is used in the front walk. An extensive shrub border screens the view of the house from the intersection and stifles traffic noise. A variety of shrubs and perennials makes up this border to provide interest throughout the year. Corner properties pose special landscaping challenges. Here the landscape designer screens the street with a colorful shrub border. A formal walkway leads from the main street, where guests might park, to the front door. A more informal walk provides access from the driveway to both entrances.
