As the name implies, Victorian Eclectic house plans may incorporate a variety of architectural stylings and details from a range of styles popularized during the Victorian era. Today's Victorian-Eclectic house plans feature exterior "gingerbread" ornamentation such as moldings, columns, spindles and patterned shingles. Corner boards often run up the edges of the typical two-story structure, which is topped with a steeply pitched roof with brackets under the eaves. Typical of these house plans, a large porch, often wrapped around the front and side of the home with spindled railings, offer a friendly façade and invite the resident family to "greet the street." Exterior colors tend to be bright and varied, mirroring the "painted ladies" of the historic Victorian era.
On the inside, expect today's Victorian-Eclectic house plans to feature an interior layout conducive to customization, with more open floor plans than one would find in homes built during the Victorian heyday of the mid- to late-1800s. All in all, a Victorian Eclectic house plan can combine the tradition of an exterior style that conjures up both whimsy and family with an interior that allows for modern activities and entertaining.
