Start small with this elegant, 324-square-foot, free-standing garden room. Use the space as a garden retreat for reading or music, or as an arts-and-crafts studio. Two tall, arched windows topped with fanlights grace three sides. A window and entry door flanked by narrow mock shutters are found in the front. The vented cupola and weathervane centered on the cedar shake roof add an air of rustic charm. To expand the living area an additional 664 square feet, extend the floor plan to each side. Add an entry foyer and full bath to one side of the existing structure and a breakfast nook with its own door to the garden on the other. Existing windows become doorways and, in one case, a window is replaced by an interior wall.
