A bit of the English countryside in these quaint cottage plans
With their sloping slate or cedar roofs, brick, stone or stucco and half-timber walls, steep cross gables and round-top doorways, storybook style English Cottage home plans are based on the medieval country cottages that dot the Cotswold region of southwestern England. At the height of their popularity in America during the 1920's and 1930's, this picturesque Tudor Revival house design usually features a prominent stone or brick chimney near the front door or side of the house and an asymmetrical design. Casement windows with small panes separated by either lead or wood muntins illuminate cozy irregularly-shaped rooms with whimsical nooks and niches on the first floor while dormers typically provide light to the sloped-ceiling rooms on the second. Also known as an Ann Hathaway or Hansel and Gretel cottage, the lovely and popular English Cottage floor plan offers families a fanciful yet functional approach to romantic country style.
