There is something special about spiral stairs. They are at once whimsical and practical. In this plan, a spiral staircase is utilized outdoors as a link between a private upstairs balcony and an expansive, first-floor deck. The appearance is dramatic, plus the staircase provides upstairs occupants quick and easy access to the deck below. This is a large deck, stretching twenty feet out from the home and extending forty feet wide for a total of over 700 square feet. The deck can be accessed from the first floor through both the gathering room and dining room. When combined, these rooms span thirty-one feet. When doors are opened to the outdoors, large groups can be accommodated with ease. The deck's V design reaches an apex at its right-hand side. This shape helps harbor a table and chairs. Just outside the dining-room entrance, a moveable barbecue or sink combination provides handy cooking and cleanup stations for family meals and entertaining. Railings along the perimeter of the deck offer safety and a professional, finished appearance. Two stairways, one directly in front of the balcony and another at the far right, allow for good ground-level access.
