Craftsman - Prairie Style House Plans

The Prairie house plan is one of the few uniquely American home designs.

One of the few indigenous American styles, the Prairie home originated in the Midwest and is characterized by its strong horizontal emphasis and integration into the landscape. Massive masonry piers, wide porch, and cantilevered floors are also distinguishable characteristics. A number of low-pitched roofs with wide overhanging eaves enhance the horizontal orientation of these homes.

Exterior walls are constructed of natural materials such as brick and clapboard, and often showcase horizontal patterns. Although ornamentation is sparse, horizontal rows of tall windows may display geometric patterns. Typically two stories or more, the innovative Prairie home plan is either laid out in a balanced rectangle manner or asymmetrically, with low horizontal lines. The airy, open floor plan allows each room to flow into the next.

      Architectural Features:

      • Multi-level
      • Low horizontal lines
      • Geometric decorative patterns
