Born out of a renewed sense of patriotism in during the hundred-year anniversary of the American Revolution in the 1870's, Colonial Revival home plans take their inspiration from earlier Georgian and Federal styles. With their stately, symmetrical facades and sturdy rectangular shape, these two to three story brick or wood-sided gable-roofed houses employ simple classical details such as temple-like entrance porticos, scrolled pediments, multi-pane double-hung windows with shutters, paneled front doors with sidelights and toped by rectangular transoms or decorative fanlights. Colonial Revival floor plans are simple and straightforward on the inside as well. They typically feature a center entry hall flanked by formal living and dining rooms on either side. Handsome staircases that lead to upstairs bedrooms, elegant fireplaces and graceful woodwork are hallmarks of this extremely popular floor plan that can also be expressed in Cape Cod, Dutch Colonial, Saltbox Colonial and Spanish Colonial revival styles.
