Popularized originally in New England in response to harsh winters and simple construction techniques, the Cape Cod house plan can be found anywhere residents want clean, symmetrical design lines. Often featuring wood shingles or clapboard siding, Cape Cod homes utilize double-hung windows with shutters, with little roof overhang and a minimum of exterior ornamentation. The symmetrical design is mirrored in the interior, which often features a center hall layout. The second-story gables add light and effective air circulation to the home. One of the most venerable American house styles, the Cape Cod house plan has adapted itself to the needs of a modern family, and now often is built in two-story versions to accommodate desire for space without ostentation.
